Megachurch Leader Backtracks After Joke Sparks Uproar
Josh Howerton, the senior pastor of Lakepointe Church in Rockwall, Texas, found himself embroiled in controversy when comments he made during a sermon in February resurfaced, sparking criticism. During the sermon, titled “Marriage Night,” Howerton attempted to inject humor by offering what he characterized as a “gold nugget of advice” about marriage, purportedly gleaned from a mentor.
In the sermon, Howerton advised men to acquiesce to their fiancées’ desires regarding wedding arrangements, jokingly suggesting that compliance would ensure their future wives’ happiness. He then turned his attention to the women in the congregation, offering a similar jest about the wedding night, suggesting that they should defer to their husbands’ wishes to ensure marital bliss.
However, these remarks were taken out of context when a 22-second clip of the sermon was shared on social media by Sheila Gregoire, host of the “Bare Marriage” podcast. Gregoire’s clip quickly went viral, drawing over 1.1 million views and sparking a heated debate about gender roles and marital expectations.
Howerton defended himself on social media, alleging that his comments had been deceptively edited to omit the context of the joke. He argued that the omitted portion, which was directed at men, would have clarified the lighthearted nature of his remarks.
Gregoire, in response, contended that the broader implications of Howerton’s comments were concerning, suggesting that they perpetuated harmful stereotypes about gender roles and marital dynamics. She criticized the notion that a woman’s sole purpose is to fulfill her husband’s desires, highlighting the potential for coercion and the dismissal of female agency.
