Student Penalized Over Christ-Focused Message

Micah Price, a recent graduate of Campbell County High School in Kentucky, finally received his diploma five days after his graduation. His diploma had been withheld because he went off script during his commencement speech, urging his classmates to find Christ. This incident sparked an intense online debate, with many Christian supporters applauding his actions as brave.

Superintendent Shelli Wilson explained that Price had been chosen to deliver an approved speech that allowed him to thank Jesus Christ but not to proselytize. Despite being instructed not to, Price included a message encouraging his classmates to seek Christ, quoting, “He is the light. He is the way, the truth, and the life.” Price admitted on TikTok that he was aware he wasn’t supposed to bring up this message but did so anyway.

After the speech, a principal informed Price that he would need to explain his deviation to the school board. Price received offers of support from people willing to stand with him during this meeting, but he asked them to support the message of Jesus instead. He also acknowledged that the school officials were simply performing their duties in reprimanding him for going off script.

Eventually, Price learned that he would only have to meet with the principals, not the entire school board. The meeting was brief and professional, and Price received his diploma shortly afterward. In an interview, he described the process as quick and painless, expressing gratitude and viewing it as an answered prayer.

Addressing the controversy, Price admitted he had broken the rules but felt compelled to share his faith. He believed he deserved to be punished but emphasized the importance of his message. Price, who is set to join the Air Force in July, has long wanted to deliver a speech honoring God, a goal he has held since fifth grade and pursued with increasing conviction since becoming a Baptist in eighth grade.
