Retired NBA Pro Makes Life-Changing Faith Move
A former NBA athlete has embraced Catholicism in a ceremony held in Rome, shortly after concluding his professional basketball career. Gordon Hayward’s conversion took place on October 1, as announced by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. The initiation rites were led by Archbishop Timothy Broglio and included Hayward’s confirmation and first Holy Communion, signifying a meaningful spiritual milestone for him.
The event was hosted at the Basilica of Saint Sebastian Outside the Wall, with Hayward’s wife and two of their four children in attendance. As part of his confirmation, he selected “Sebastian” as his confirmation name, honoring the patron saint of athletes and soldiers. This decision followed a period of contemplation while participating in the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA), under the guidance of Father Marcel Taillon, who oversees vocations for the archdiocese.
Hayward took to social media to share the moment, posting a photo with Archbishop Broglio, Father Taillon, his OCIA sponsor Maxwell Van Vliet, and two seminarians. The image featured the phrase “Nunc coepi,” which translates to “now I have begun,” symbolizing the start of his new spiritual journey. His wife, Robyn, also celebrated the occasion online, expressing her happiness and noting the involvement of many seminarians and priests during the ceremony.
This significant step in Hayward’s faith journey follows his announcement of retirement from basketball on August 1. In his retirement message, he reflected on his career, expressing gratitude for the unexpected opportunities he encountered along the way. He shared his favorite Bible verse, Philippians 4:13, which states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” highlighting his faith and appreciation for the support he received during his time in the league.
Overall, Hayward’s conversion to Catholicism marks an important new chapter in his life, intertwining his athletic legacy with his spiritual commitments. His heartfelt reflections and the support of his family underscore the pivotal role of faith in his post-basketball journey.
