Heartwarming Film Transforms Perspective On God’s Creation

The film “My Penguin Friend,” inspired by the true story of an unusual bond between a Brazilian fisherman and a penguin, is set to hit theaters with hopes of highlighting the joy of friendship and the importance of caring for the environment. Produced by Dr. Jonathan Lim, the film aims to offer a heartwarming portrayal of how unexpected connections can profoundly impact our lives.

The story centers on Joao, portrayed by Jean Reno, an elderly fisherman from Provetá Beach in Ilha Grande, Brazil, who is grieving the loss of his young son. His life changes when he rescues a Magellanic penguin named Dindim, found covered in oil and near death. After rehabilitating Dindim, Joao is astonished when the penguin returns annually, traveling thousands of miles to visit him.

Dr. Jonathan Lim, who transitioned from leading successful biotech companies to filmmaking, established City Hill Arts with a vision to produce inspiring and impactful entertainment. His move to filmmaking, sparked by a sabbatical in 2017, aims to blend compelling stories with positive messages. “My Penguin Friend” is the first film under this new venture, focusing on themes of loss, recovery, and environmental stewardship.

The film, rated PG, integrates themes of environmental conservation, highlighting the impact of pollution on wildlife. Lim hopes it will inspire viewers to reflect on their relationships and the importance of caring for the planet. Despite challenges in securing traditional distribution, the film has garnered support through grassroots marketing, with Roadside Attractions and Universal Pictures joining as distribution partners.

Looking ahead, City Hill Arts is planning several other projects, including “The Secret of Life,” about scientist Rosalind Franklin, and “Last Days,” which tells the story of missionary John Allen Chau. Lim is also working on “In the Beginning,” a cinematic portrayal of the creation story. “My Penguin Friend” opens in theaters on August 16, and Lim is eager to see how the film will resonate with audiences.
