Maryland Church Teacher’s Dark Past
A church teacher from Maryland facing charges of assaulting four girls has been discovered to have entered the United States illegally after being deported twice, according to an official statement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Ervin Jeovany Alfaro Lopez, aged 33 and residing in Germantown, was taken into custody on Monday following an investigation conducted by the Montgomery County Department of Police, Special Victims Investigations Division.
Originally hailing from El Salvador, Alfaro Lopez was deported in 2018 and granted voluntary departure in 2019 after being found guilty of illegally entering the country on two separate occasions, as per reports from Fox 5 based in Washington, D.C. In 2020, he was deported once again after being apprehended by border patrol agents in Texas, but he managed to return to the United States under undisclosed circumstances.
Alfaro Lopez had previously been arrested by Montgomery County police in August of the preceding year and charged with second-degree rape and two counts of third-degree sex offenses. However, when an Immigration Detainer was issued against him, the Montgomery County Detention Center chose not to honor it, resulting in his release.
Darius Reeves, Director of the Enforcement and Removal Operations Baltimore Field Office, highlighted this case as an example of the serious consequences of allowing individuals with criminal backgrounds to reintegrate into communities without complying with ICE detainers.
Reeves stressed the importance of preventing the recurrence of dangerous offenders, such as gang members, child molesters, rapists, and individuals involved in murders, within communities. He criticized the failure to honor ICE detainers as an obstruction of federal law enforcement efforts.
According to Montgomery County Police, detectives from the Special Victims Investigations Division initiated an investigation into Alfaro Lopez in May of the previous year following a report from one of the alleged victims of sexual abuse.
Throughout the investigation, detectives identified three additional victims who reported instances of sexual abuse by Alfaro Lopez between 2016 and 2018. The victims were between 6 and 12 years old at the time of the offenses, while Alfaro Lopez was between 25 and 27 years old.
Alfaro Lopez is currently being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
