New Bishop Assumes Leadership At DLI

The Douglass Leadership Institute (DLI) appointed Bishop Garland Hunt as its new president following the passing of the late Rev. Dean Nelson, the organization’s founder. Hunt was nominated during a recent board meeting and unanimously endorsed by the DLI board, with Chairman Keith Frasier highlighting Hunt’s character and experience as crucial in carrying forward Nelson’s legacy.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Hunt pledged to advance DLI’s mission while acknowledging Rev. Nelson’s unique contributions. He emphasized his commitment to expanding DLI’s influence, especially in navigating the current societal and spiritual challenges in America.

Founded by Rev. Nelson in 2015, DLI focuses on empowering faith leaders, particularly within the African American community, by integrating biblical principles into public life and commerce. Under Nelson’s guidance, DLI became a nationwide network advocating for a comprehensive understanding of the black American Christian perspective.

The institute’s mission is to educate, equip, and empower faith-based leaders to apply biblical principles in life and the marketplace, aiming for active civic engagement and leadership within the black community.

Bishop Hunt, also the senior pastor at The Father’s House Church in Atlanta, brings extensive leadership experience to the role, having served in various capacities, including president of Prison Fellowship and executive vice president of Fellowship of International Churches. His legal background, stemming from his education at Howard University and Howard University Law School, further enriches his expertise.

Rev. Dean Nelson’s passing was mourned by many, with pro-life activist Ryan Bomberger and pro-life advocate Alveda King honoring his legacy of advocating for life, faith, and family. Hunt’s appointment signifies a continuation of DLI’s mission, aiming to navigate societal challenges while upholding its commitment to faith-based leadership and civic engagement within the African American community.
