Christian Critics Accuse Dating Platform Of Sinful Promotion

eHarmony, a well-known online dating platform, is currently under scrutiny from the conservative Christian group One Million Moms due to a recent LGBT-inclusive advertisement featuring a lesbian couple. This advertisement is part of eHarmony’s “Get Who Gets You: Warm Laundry” campaign, which One Million Moms criticizes for allegedly “normalizing and glamorizing the LGBTQ lifestyle.”

The commercial portrays an intimate domestic scene with a lesbian couple lounging on a couch, heads close together, and legs entwined. One partner gathers warm laundry while the other reclines on the bed, leading to a playful moment with draped laundry and a concealed kiss amid the clothes. Accompanied by the romantic background music of “Lost in Love” by Toodlum Barker & Emil Lomax, the ad concludes with eHarmony’s slogan, “Get Who Gets You.”

One Million Moms has initiated a petition, claiming that the ad seeks to “brainwash” both children and adults, going against biblical teachings as per Romans 1:26-27 from the Bible. The group wants eHarmony to remove the advertisement, arguing that it promotes a “liberal LGBTQ agenda” during family viewing hours.

This is not the first time eHarmony has faced these challenges. In 2007, the company was sued for allegedly discriminating against the LGBTQ community by not providing services. The lawsuit, filed by Linda Carlson, accused eHarmony of discrimination based on sexual orientation, highlighting a denial of access to the dating service due to her sexual orientation.

Founded in 2000 by Evangelical Christian Dr. Neil Clark Warren, eHarmony has navigated tensions over the years by distancing the platform from its Evangelical roots and promoting inclusivity. Despite criticism and past legal issues, eHarmony continues to operate as an online dating platform, using patented algorithms to match singles. The current controversy underscores the ongoing challenges eHarmony faces in balancing inclusivity with diverse user expectations, including those from conservative segments of the population.
