Evangelist Explains Mission To Share Christ

A prominent pastor has defended his decision to speak and pray at a rally with former President Donald Trump just weeks before the presidential election, arguing that it aligns with his mission to guide people toward Christ. Pastor Greg Laurie, founder of Harvest churches in California and Hawaii, explained in a post that he was invited to participate in a Trump rally in Coachella and expressed willingness to do the same for Vice President Kamala Harris if asked. He emphasized that when he enters such settings, he represents the Kingdom of God and sees it as part of his role as a pastor to engage in political discussions.

Laurie pushed back against the notion that Christians should steer clear of politics, questioning the origins of such beliefs. He referenced Thomas Jefferson’s letters about the separation of church and state, arguing that the intention was to prevent government interference in church affairs, not to exclude church influence from politics. He asserted that Christians have a duty to be active in all aspects of society, encouraging believers to shine as lights and act as “salt” in the world, a metaphor he explained by likening it to the role of salt in preserving food.

In his address at the rally, Laurie expressed concern over the negative labeling of Christians as “Christian nationalists,” presenting himself instead as “a Christian patriot.” He quoted George Washington, suggesting that being a patriot and a Christian is consistent with the nation’s founding values. Laurie also refuted the claims that Christian nationalism poses a threat to American politics, emphasizing that Christians simply wish to express their faith and uphold their rights under the First Amendment.

Highlighting the importance of voting, Laurie called attention to the low turnout among Evangelical Christians and urged those attending the rally to vote with biblical principles in mind. He described the upcoming election as critically important, reflecting on his experiences meeting with Trump in the White House, where he prayed for the nation. During the rally, Laurie led a prayer asking for protection and wisdom for Trump, expressing gratitude for the support Trump has shown to the Christian community and concluding with The Lord’s Prayer.
