Ex-Bishop’s Dark Secrets Exposed
Todd Atkinson, a former bishop of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) hailing from North America, faced the prospect of being removed from his ministry following an ecclesiastical trial that found him guilty of various charges, notably involving inappropriate relationships with women. Serving as the bishop of the Via Apostolica Missionary District based in Alberta, Canada, Atkinson’s tenure came to an abrupt end as he was ousted from ordained ministry consequent to the trial’s culmination.
The Court for the Trial of a Bishop within the ACNA rendered its verdict in April, highlighting Atkinson’s actions as “conduct giving just cause for scandal or offense, including the abuse of ecclesiastical power.” The charges levied against him encompassed a spectrum of misconduct, ranging from inappropriate relationships with women to meddling in marital and familial affairs, as well as inappropriate engagements with underage females. Moreover, the verdict underscored instances of abusing ecclesiastical authority through manipulation and coercion.
ACNA Archbishop Foley Beach expressed gratitude toward those who stepped forward, acknowledging the inherent risks associated with seeking justice. He implored for prayers for all parties impacted, stressing the importance of reconciliation, healing, contrition, and the implementation of corrective measures to foster safer church environments.
Contrastingly, the Anglican Diocese of the Upper Midwest, where Atkinson served as acting assistant bishop, issued a statement asserting their unawareness of any untoward behavior during his tenure. They urged individuals harboring concerns or in need of pastoral assistance to avail themselves of support services within their congregations.
The probe into allegations of misconduct against Atkinson, instigated by ACNA in November 2021, encompassed accusations of abusing ecclesiastical authority. Throughout this investigative phase, Atkinson was placed on administrative leave, with Bishop Quigg Lawrence appointed to oversee affairs within Via Apostolica during the inquiry process.
