Disgraced Church Founder’s Son Opens New House Of Worship

James Morris, the son of former Gateway Church founder Robert Morris from Southlake, Texas, has unveiled the name of the church he plans to establish: Passage Church. This announcement came shortly after he and his wife, Bridgette, shared their plans to start their own church. Abuse survivor advocate Amy Smith posted the news, highlighting the couple’s excitement about the name.

In their statement, James and Bridgette expressed gratitude for the church name, which they believe was confirmed through prayer, scripture, and conversations with others. Their decision to plant Passage Church follows James’ resignation from Gateway Church in July, just weeks after taking on a leadership role. His father, Robert Morris, had stepped down in June due to allegations of sexual abuse.

The name “Passage Church” has a twofold meaning. It refers both to scripture, reflecting the couple’s commitment to teaching the Word of God, and to life’s various transitions. The church aims to be a place where people can seek God throughout their spiritual journey. They referenced John 10:9, where Jesus calls Himself “the door,” symbolizing a passage, to further explain the significance of the name.

The couple has plans to host an interest meeting in early October, though they have not yet secured a venue. They asked for prayers from supporters as they search for both a meeting location and a permanent worship space. While they are confident in God’s provision, they recognize the practical need for a place to gather.

James and Bridgette also invited those interested in volunteering or joining the launch team to get involved by attending the interest meeting or contacting them via email. They emphasized the importance of prayer in helping Passage Church grow and fulfill its mission.
