Churchgoers Foil Terror At Communion Mass
In Abbeville, Louisiana, during a First Communion Mass at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, a potentially tragic event was averted by quick-thinking parishioners. A 16-year-old armed with a rifle attempted to disrupt the service, but the community swiftly intervened. They disarmed the teenager and escorted him out before law enforcement arrived, preventing harm to the 60 children and other worshippers present.
The incident, which occurred on a Saturday, garnered praise for the rapid response from both the parishioners and local law enforcement. Despite the disruption, the safety of attendees was ensured, thanks to the courageous actions of those present.
Fr. Nicholas DuPre, the associate pastor leading the Mass, calmly directed the congregation to sit and initiated prayers, maintaining order and calmness amidst the chaos. Law enforcement officers conducted a sweep of the church to ensure there were no additional threats, following the suspect’s claim of another potential shooter nearby.
Chief Mike Hardy of the Abbeville Police Department commended the bravery of the parishioners, acknowledging their role in swiftly addressing the situation. The teenager was subsequently charged and detained for evaluation, while authorities continue their investigation into the incident.
In response to the event, the parish announced enhanced security measures for future Masses, including the presence of uniformed law enforcement. The community remained steadfast in their faith and commitment to safety, echoing Fr. DuPre’s message of not succumbing to fear and continuing to gather for worship.
