Pastor Dishes Out Election Advice For Faithful Voters
Amidst an approaching election season fraught with contention, Robert Jeffress, the pastor of First Baptist Dallas and a former spiritual advisor to Donald Trump, is emphasizing the imperative for Christians to base their voting decisions on biblical principles rather than mere party allegiance.
Speaking at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention, Jeffress stressed the role of pastors in addressing pertinent issues rather than endorsing specific candidates. He underscored the significance of voting as both a right and a responsibility bestowed by God, referencing John Jay’s assertion regarding citizens’ privilege in selecting their leaders.
According to Jeffress, the elected leaders hold a pivotal sway in shaping national policies, thereby influencing the moral and spiritual trajectory of the country. He urged Christians to discern their votes as reflective of their commitment to righteousness, emphasizing the importance of scrutinizing candidates’ policies through a biblical lens.
While recent surveys indicate a notable portion of evangelical Protestants harboring favorable views of former President Trump, Jeffress acknowledged the discomfort some Christians may encounter in voting for either Trump or President Biden. He reminded voters of the profound impact elections can wield, citing the pivotal role of the 2016 election in reshaping the U.S. Supreme Court and potentially overturning Roe v. Wade.
Regarding American exceptionalism, Jeffress rejected the notion of unconditional divine favor towards any nation, emphasizing the biblical principle that nations blessed by God are those that honor Him. He cautioned against the rejection of God leading to divine disfavor.
Reflecting on whether the U.S. can be deemed a Christian nation, Jeffress pointed to its founding principles and the Judeo-Christian values engrained in its laws and culture. He acknowledged the diversity of the nation’s founders but underscored the Christian influence on the nation’s legal framework.
Looking forward to the 2024 election, Jeffress reminded Christians of the certainty of tribulation in the world but also the promise of ultimate victory through Christ. He encouraged believers to maintain courage in the face of challenges, drawing on Jesus’ assurance that He has overcome the world.
These remarks were delivered by Jeffress at the NRB’s International Christian Media Convention, where former President Trump also addressed the audience. Trump highlighted concerns about perceived hostility towards Christians under the Biden administration, pledging to address these issues if re-elected. He warned of internal threats to the country and expressed determination to confront them effectively.
