Female detainees at La Esperanza prison in Nicaragua, including those held for political reasons, are enduring severe mistreatment due to their expression of faith through prayer. Beginning in mid-January, these women have been arbitrarily denied outdoor privileges, a stark departure from their previous allowance of outdoor time once a week. Disturbing reports detail instances of physical abuse during interrogations, evidenced by visible bruises on the women’s bodies. Moreover, political prisoners are being denied access to fundamental religious materials such as Bibles and writing instruments, a clear violation of internationally recognized standards such as the Nelson Mandela Rules.
One such inmate affected by these injustices is Olesia Auxiliadora Muñoz Pavon, a choir director hailing from Santa Ana Parish in Niquinohomo, Masaya Department. Despite gaining acclaim for leading hymn singing within the prison, Muñoz Pavon found herself arrested on April 6, 2023, following a previous detention stemming from baseless charges between August 2018 and June 2019.
La Esperanza prison is infamous for its overcrowded conditions and dire lack of basic amenities such as potable water, adequate bedding, and medical attention. Some prisoners are subjected to solitary confinement, and recent modifications to maximum-security cells have only exacerbated the isolation experienced by political detainees.
Access to Nicaraguan correctional facilities has been severely restricted, with organizations like the Nicaraguan Centre for Human Rights barred since 2010 and the Red Cross expelled in 2023. The U.N. Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua has unequivocally condemned the government’s flagrant disregard for human rights, urging the immediate release of all individuals unjustly detained.
Various advocacy groups, including Christian Solidarity Worldwide, have vehemently denounced the appalling treatment of prisoners and demanded adherence to established international norms. Furthermore, they have drawn attention to the escalating persecution faced by Christians in Nicaragua, citing the arbitrary arrests of Christian leaders and the forced closures of religious institutions. The plight of Mountain Gateway, a mission organization embroiled in legal disputes with the Nicaraguan government, further underscores the precarious situation confronting religious entities in the country.
