Broadcaster and journalist Kate Nicholas has shared the profound spiritual impact of her “second cancer journey.” Formerly the global communications director for Christian charity World Vision, Kate delves into the deeper connection with God that emerged during her recurrence of cancer.

In her recently released book, ‘To the Ocean Floor’ (Authentic), Kate recounts her journey, recalling, “When initially diagnosed with breast cancer, God assured me that I ‘will not die, but live and declare the works of the Lord.’ After surviving, I dedicated my life to this mission. However, seven years later, cancer resurfaced vigorously. In a state of desperation, I descended into the depths of consciousness, reaching the ocean floor, where I encountered God in a way that surpassed words or imagination.”

Known for her TV series on the Christian channel TBN, exploring ‘Living a Transformed Life,’ Kate had previously lived in remission from breast cancer, actively sharing her story at church events. The resurgence of the condition prompted her to reevaluate her life and faith.

‘To the Ocean Floor’ details the shock of the cancer’s return and the subsequent treatments. Reflecting on her initial diagnosis, Kate recognized, “Looking back, I began to see for the first time how God had always been there as a presence in my life.”

During her remission years, Kate immersed herself in a bustling lifestyle of broadcasting, writing, and speaking. The return of cancer compelled her to embrace a period of rest and undergo various treatments. She expressed, “God seems to be showing me through this cancer experience that the time has come to be more like Martha’s sister, Mary—to learn how to simply be in the moment, taking time to exist.”

Engaging in Christian meditation and reflective exercises, Kate found solace amid her cancer journey. Holy Communion also played a significant role for her, symbolizing the mysterious cycle of death and resurrection.

Although currently in remission after extended treatment, Kate remains uncertain about the future. Embracing each moment, she emphasizes the importance of enjoying life in all its seasons, echoing the sentiment of Jesus in John 10:10 about having life to its fullest. For Kate, a full life entails embracing the rich tapestry of existence granted in every season.
