The Office of Public Affairs for the Episcopal Church issued a concise update, sharing that Bishop Curry, aged 71, experienced the fall in New York, leading to a subdural hematoma and subsequent successful surgery. He’s currently recuperating in a Raleigh hospital, and the office has urged prayers for his well-being, along with his family and medical team. Further updates on his condition will follow.
This health concern follows Curry’s prior surgery to remove his right adrenal gland and an associated mass, which had previously caused episodes of internal bleeding. Having been discharged in October following the September surgery, Curry had adopted a reduced schedule and commenced physical therapy.
These medical incidents unfolded during the final year of Curry’s tenure as the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, a progressive Protestant denomination. Notably, Curry made history in 2015 by becoming the first African American to hold this esteemed leadership position in the Church’s extensive history spanning over two centuries.
