The church was engulfed in flames.

On Friday evening, a four-alarm fire caused severe damage and a partial roof collapse at the historic sanctuary of First Baptist Dallas, a well-known Southern Baptist megachurch in Texas. The fire prompted an extensive emergency response, with firefighters initially called to the scene around 6:05 p.m. A second alarm was requested shortly after, and while the primary fire has been contained, crews continued their efforts into Saturday morning. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the church’s secondary chapel also experienced damage.

First Baptist Dallas expressed their gratitude on social media, emphasizing their thankfulness that no injuries occurred and praising the efforts of first responders. Despite the damage, the church plans to hold its Sunday services at the Dallas Convention Center. The church’s leadership, including Pastor Robert Jeffress, highlighted their belief in divine protection and urged the community to continue praying. Jeffress reflected on the sanctuary’s personal significance to him, including key moments such as his baptism and ordination.

The historic sanctuary, built in 1890, was the church’s original place of worship before moving to a new facility about 12 years ago. Jeffress and other church members have received support and prayers from various notable figures, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz and O.S. Hawkins, chancellor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Hawkins and Cruz both acknowledged the church’s historical importance and expressed sorrow over the loss.

The fire’s impact has been felt widely, with many prominent Christian leaders and supporters expressing their condolences and appreciation for the church’s enduring legacy. Despite the significant damage, the resilience of the church community remains strong, with plans in place to continue their services and maintain their mission.
